This is an example course on Organizing Your Life. The course begins with telling the learners upfront why they should organize their life. Understanding the ‘why’ i.e., why the learners should invest their time in a course and what’s in it for them is very important, particularly for adult learners. Once they understand the importance of organizing and their interest is piqued, they are given a short test to help them identify how organized they are so they can deep dive in the training with a clear vision of where they stand and what they would learn by the end of the course. In this course, the learners get the opportunity to learn some expert tips on organizing and develop some good habits to stay organized. Finally, at the end, there is a knowledge check to check their retention of learning.
Inspiration for creating this course
I like being organized because I feel I accomplish more when I’ve an organized workplace and home. But, organizing life is more than organizing just the physical space. It also means organizing our routine and our mind. It is one thing to get organized and a different thing altogether to maintain that in the long run. That is why, when life happens and things tend to get disorganized a bit, I tend to check myself to get back on track. Tips from organizing experts often help and motivate me during this time. That’s why I designed a course on organizing that can help others just like me to get and be organized.
Design and Development
There’s a lot of content available online on organizing. Instead of making this course heavy on content that could discourage learners, I’ve organized content in bite size pieces on each slide. This example features sliders, markers, and various others interactive features designed with the use of variables in Storyline.
I wanted to include soft but happy background music in this course. Storyline does not play continuous background music if the mp4 is included in each slide. It plays the music from the beginning each time the learner begins a new slide. This can be distracting. However, thanks to JavaScript and the ability to add JS code inside Storyline, there are a lot of things that are possible within Storyline. This example shows how we can play background music without any breaks using JavaScript when the learners access different slides. I also modified the code a bit to pause it on the slide where I included a video so that the learners can play and watch the video without any distraction. Research varies on whether music helps or deters learning by increasing cognitive load. There are some learners who learn better with background music on, there are others who don’t. I think where possible we should give an option to the learners to pause or play the background music depending on how they learn best. In this example, I’ve not included the option to pause the music but it’s available in one of my other examples.
