Who doesn’t enjoy a good game? It’s a great feeling to be immersed in a game and then to come out victorious at the end.
If we can incorporate the elements of a game in our course, I believe we can not only make the course more engaging but also more fun.
Fun has a positive effect on motivation levels, determining what we learn and how much we retain. Learning isn’t a one-off event. It requires repetition and dedication. If the experience is fun, learners will stay curious and keep coming back for more.
In her book, Neurologist, Judy Willis showed how fun experiences increase levels of dopamine, endorphins, and oxygen – all things that promote learning.
Many influential researchers (Dulay & Burt, 1977; Krashen, 1982) have found evidence that people learn better when they’re feeling strong positive emotions.
Research proves that learning should be fun to make people learn better and often. So, I’m always on the lookout to include fun interactions in the e-learning courses that I create.
Articulate Storyline is one of my favorite software for creating interactive courses. One leisurely weekend, when I was playing Sudoku, I wanted to experiment and see if I could create a similar game in Storyline. I like creating new and varied interactions within the software in my spare time. It not only helps me brush up my skills, but when developing an actual training program, I’m also aware of the kind of interactions that will be effective in the courses, will work as intended, and I’d be able to create fairly quickly.
Now, sit back, and enjoy playing this game of Visual Sudoku. As you play this game, do notice that I’ve included clear instructions in the beginning so the users are aware of how they are supposed to play the game. Once the game begins, the users have the opportunity to pause and then restart the game at their leisure. I’ve also included a timer so they know how much time they have left to complete the game. The timer creates that sense of urgency for the users to complete the game before the time runs out. I’ve created this timer using variables in Storyline.
